Should I Credit my Codeshare Flight to British Airways Executive Club?

Codeshares are tricky to deal with as a frequent flyer. On the one hand, they are sometimes cheaper than booking directly with the operating airline (for reasons that are often difficult to understand). On the other hand, earning miles and status credit becomes far more complicated.

If you find a fare that looks tempting – but requires you to book it as a codeshare – here is what you need to know about crediting that flight to British Airways Executive Club…

Examples

American Airlines Operated Flight, Marketed by Finnair

Because this is a Oneworld airline flight code operated by another Oneworld airline, you CAN earn Avios and Tier Points.

With Oneworld, you should earn Avios and Tier Points based on the marketing fare code, without having to guess at the operating airline’s perspective.

Vueling Operated Flight, Marketed by British Airways

Because this is a British Airways flight code operated by a non-partner airline, you CAN earn Avios and Tier Points from British Airways Executive Club.

Vueling Operated Flight, Marketed by Iberia or Vueling

Because this is a Oneworld airline flight code operated by a non-partner airline, you do NOT earn Avios or Tier Points from British Airways Executive Club.

For what it’s worth, you wouldn’t be able to earn miles from Alaska Mileage Plan or American AAdvantage either…

LATAM Operated Flight, Marketed by Iberia

Even though this is a Oneworld airline flight code operated by another partner airline, you do NOT earn Avios or Tier Points from British Airways.

If you book certain LATAM operated flights under a LATAM flight code, you WILL earn Avios, but no Tier Points.

Avianca Operated Flight, Marketed by Iberia

Because this is a Oneworld airline flight code operated by a non-partner airline, you do NOT earn Avios or Tier Points from British Airways Executive Club.

Emirates Operated Flight, Marketed by Qantas

This is a rare exception. You CAN earn Avios and Tier Points when booking Emirates flights, as long as they are booked as a Qantas codeshare.

Bottom Line

If you want to earn Avios and Tier Points with British Airways Executive Club while booking a codeshare, you must:

  • Make sure that the marketing and operating carrier are both Oneworld airlines
  • Book using a BA flight code

For everything else, you will have to look at the frequent flyer programs offered by the marketing airline or the operating airline…

    • Craig Sowerby says

      No Avios or Tier Points.

It would fall under “marketed by partner airline and operated by Oneworld airline”.
