When I visited Boeing in Seattle, a marketing executive pointed out that it’s not actually called mood lighting. The correct term is “dynamic lighting”, which makes a lot of sense. Aer Lingus have announced that not only are they rolling out mood lighting, but that 25 aircraft have already been completed. This means it is already over half way complete.
Mood Lighting Is Great
Cobalt Aerospace are providing the LED based system for Aer Lingus and it will have four different settings. During boarding, “Strong Blue” will be used since the colour is said to keep people calm. British Airways use blue lighting during boarding and it is certainly less stressful as a result.
“Dim Lavender” will be used inflight and is really the only other colour you will see. “Bright White” is reserved for cleaning and maintenance staff who actually need to see what they’re doing, while “Aer Lingus Teal Green” will be used for special events only.
What Does It All Look Like?
Apart from the picture at the top of this post, who knows? It is somewhat unfortunate that examples of all the colours were not shown as it would be fun to see them all. I presume the picture at the top shows the “Aer Lingus Teal Green”, but that’s just a guess.
One thing the picture does show up is that it’s time for Aer Lingus to rethink their seat covers. They are now looking pretty dated and that’s not surprising since they came in over ten years ago.
Overall Thoughts
Bringing in mood lighting will keep Aer Lingus in their niche as leading value carrier across the Atlantic. Making the European experience more in line with what is offered on Transatlantic flights is the right thing to do.
What do you think of mood lighting? Love it? Hate it? Think it’s a fad? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
