Japan Airlines Mileage Bank is changing the rate of mileage accumulation on international JAL flights based on the fare booked. Some fares will now earn more miles while discounted rates will earn less. Economy W and Y fares (normal fare, economy saver flex, saver premium) will continue to earn 100 percent of the miles flown and booking classes H, K and M will stay at 70 percent of miles flown. B and E booking classes (economy saver and dynamic saver premium) will increase from 70 to 100 percent of miles flown while economy booking classes L, V, and S will decrease from 70 to 50 percent and Q and N will decrease from 50 to 30 percent. The changes will take effect on April 1, 2013.
Other changes include more bonus miles for JGC JALCARD members when traveling first and business class. Mile-UP bonuses are also now five percent more across the board and will earn more miles when flying first or business class.

Bottom line: JAL is going along with the recent industry trend of awarding those who spend more rather than those who travel more.
