To coincide with the USA opening up to vaccinated travellers from many countries (including Spain) today, Iberia has announced flights to Madrid from three new cities – Dallas, San Francisco, and Washington DC.

These are all scheduled for the summer season, which begins in April 2022 and will apparently be available for booking in “the near future”.

New Iberia routes:

Dallas – Madrid starting in April, Iberia will operate four weekly return flights

Washington DC – Madrid starting in April, Iberia will operate four weekly return flights

San Francisco – Madrid (technically a resumption rather than a new destination) starting in April, Iberia will operate three weekly return flights

For savvy Avios collectors, this is excellent news for two reasons:

1) Transferring Avios to Iberia Plus in order to book Iberia flights to the USA (particularly in Business Class) is one of the best value redemptions still around.

Off-Peak pricing (one way) from Washington should be:

  • 17,000 Avios – Economy
  • 25,500 Avios – Premium Economy
  • 34,000 Avios – Business Class

Peak date pricing (one way)

  • 20,000 Avios – Economy
  • 35,000 Avios – Premium Economy
  • 50,000 Avios – Business Class

Off Peak pricing from San Francisco and Dallas (one way) should be:

  • 21,250 Avios – Economy
  • 31,750 Avios – Premium Economy
  • 42,500 Avios – Business Class

Peak date pricing (one way)

  • 25,000 Avios – Economy
  • 43,750 Avios – Premium Economy
  • 62,500 Avios – Business Class

Taxes/surcharges generally work out at under $150 each way.

2) New routes usually have plenty of award space available when they first become bookable – so keep an eye out for that!

If you’re looking to head to Europe before next April, in the current winter season (that began on 31 October), Iberia has 70 scheduled flights per week between the US and Spain.

Specifically, the airline is operating 10 weekly return flights from both New York and Miami, five flights a week from Chicago, and three weekly flights from Boston and Los Angeles. It is also flying four times a week from San Juan in Puerto Rico,

Bottom line

It’s always nice to have more options for good-value Avios redemptions – and with travel to Europe now much easier for many people, the new Iberia routes are great to see.

Are you looking forward to visiting Europe again soon?
