The image: Spring break, Cancun, yeah, buddy! The reality: quiet hotel far from the action. I stayed here about a year and a half ago for a conference. We choose the Westin Resort & Spa Cancun because it was half the cost of the host hotel, and it’s a Starwood hotel (gotta get those stays in). Was it as boring as it sounded? Keep reading my review of the Westin Resort & Spa Cancun to find out.
The Westin Resort & Spa Cancun is a beach front hotel at the farthest end of Cancun’s Hotel Zone. So you’ll have uninterrupted sleep during the late hours. But you’ll have to travel further to party and have a choice of restaurants.
Each of the 379 rooms offers a view of Nichupte Lagoon or the Caribbean Sea.
Location/Arrival/Check-in
As Goldilocks would say, check-in was “just right.” Neither super expedient nor annoyingly slow. But given the language barrier (I don’t routinely use my Spanish despite living in Southern California ) check-in was fine.
There was a separate line for SPG Platinum guests, but it wasn’t staffed. The host acknowledged my roommate’s Gold status (without an explanation of benefits) and gave me a key.
Room
We booked a double room and because my roommate is a Starwood Gold, our room was on a designated SPG guest floor. Our room had an ocean view (or more correctly, view of the Caribbean Sea.)
The beds were Westin Heavenly beds. And of course, super comfortable.
There was a 32″ flat screen TV on top of the dresser across from the beds, a desk, and a chair and occasional table. It’s a basic room without bells and whistles.
But when you’re in Cancun and staying a double room, you’re not planning on spending a lot of time in your room.
Bathroom
The bathroom was functional. There’s room for two people at the counter but with only one sink, it’s easier to take turns.
The shower was definitely a one-person unit. It’s a tight fit so if you’re above average sized, you might want to soap the walls or have a “lifeline.” But it had a nice looking shower head and a large handle. Maybe that was the “pull me out of here” handle?
The water pressure and temperature varied.
There were two free bottles of water which are replenished daily.
Sitting Area
If you didn’t want to sit on your bed, there were only two other places to sit: at the desk or in the chair by the window. The chair is more comfortable, but neither faced the TV. 🙁
Elite Status Recognition & Benefits
As a Starwood Gold, you get an upgrade (if available). I’m not sure if we got an upgraded room aside from a room on the Starwood Preferred Guest floor.
Facilities
The Westin Resort & Spa Cancun has so many amenities. You could spend your entire vacation at the resort.
There are four outdoor pools, two outdoor tennis courts, a fitness center, spa, sauna, the Westin Kids Club program, on-site car rental, and a tour desk.
Cost & Summary
The cash rate for a Double room in the fall is $125 a night. The Westin Resort & Spa is a Category 3 hotel so free nights are 7,000 points a night.
The beachfront location is perfect if you want to hang out on the beach without crowds or being bothered by people selling jewelry and other items. The Westin Resort & Spa Cancun is a good choice if you want to be in the Hotel Zone but away from the crowds.
