Beginning with the new year, Emirates Skywards is drastically changing. Specifically, there are 10 key changes beginning Jan. 1, 2010. Some of the changes include: miles will be earned by fare type (“Flex” fares will earn more miles than “Saver” fares); tier miles will also be earned by fare type, destination and class of travel–you’ll earn more tier miles with a Flex fare (the amount of tier miles to achieve elite will remain the same but the amount of time you’ll have to achieve the status will change to a rolling 13 months); class-of-service bonuses will increase to 150 percent for first class and 75 percent for business class (currently, it’s 100 and 50); earning zones by geographic areas will be introduced that match the current award structure; award flights will be divided between “Flex” and “Saver” awards as will upgrades; one-way Flex Rewards will be introduced for half the miles of a roundtrip award and the “Skywards Miles Accelerator” will offer flight bonuses throughout the year. With these changes also comes some increases and decreases for award flight redemptions. For example, flights to and from Dubai will now require more miles.
