Buying airline miles is something that you really ought to only do if you have a clear, money-saving, use in mind. Speculative purchases are far less sensible – unless the airline is selling miles for far cheaper than normal. I’m not sure that this offer from American Airlines AAdvantage qualifies, but I’ll let you decide…

Between now and 11:59pm CT on November 29, 2021, AAdvantage members can receive up to 45% discount when buying miles.

The significant discounts kick in when you buy at least 35,000 miles, where you would pay:

  • $677 for 35,000 miles –> 1.93 cents per mile
  • $1,064 for 60,000 miles –> 1.77 cents per mile

What Does 60,000 Miles Get Me?

For 57,500 miles, you can fly one-way to Europe in Business Class  (however if you fly on British Airways you will pay some outrageous surcharges).

For 60,000 miles, you can fly one-way to Japan in Business Class.

$1,000 + taxes is likely to be a pretty good deal for those Business Class flights, although you are limited, of course, to saver award space.

The Bottom Line

1.77 US cents per mile is substantially better than AAdvantage’s standard promotions (1.9-2.0 cents is more standard) But, is this price low enough to tempt you to buy AA miles?
