WOW air, the carrier with the exciting name and ho-hum slogan (“Iceland’s most punctual airline”) is celebrating the arrival of Iceland’s 13 Yule Lads with another great fare sale. Flying from Baltimore and Boston to their hub in Reykjavik,this is one of those sales that make us just want to say ‘Wow’!

WOW air is a great little “low cost carrier” which has super low fares and then charges you for everything, from seat assignments to carry-ons to checked bags. However, if you layer your winter clothes and travel light, this sale could be an incredible deal. WOW air only flies from Baltimore and Boston at this time, so in order to take advantage of these fares you would have to position to one of those two gateway cities.

In addition to the fare sale, WOW air is also sharing with us the traditional folklore of Iceland’s  13 Yule Lads who visit the towns in Iceland, one by one, to put little presents in children’s shoes. They have been known to raise havoc in Icelandic homes although in recent years they are now better known for their humor and generosity.  Traditionally, the little trolls begin their visits on  December 12th and end on December 24th. On each of those nights, children place one of their shoes on the windowsill. For good boys and girls, the Yule Lad will leave candy or a small present but if they have been naughty, they may end up with a raw potato instead! The Icelandic Yule Lads have pretty weird names like Gully Gawk, Spoon-Licker, Skyr-Gobbler, Doorway-Sniffer, Sausage-Swiper, Meat-Hook and Candle-Beggar.  More on the story of Iceland’s very special trolls can be found on WOW’s Online Magazine.

Bottom Line

Even though WOW air has limited departure cities and the sale is only good for limited dates, for some flyers this will be an incredible deal.  Although it is located far to the north, winter temperatures tend to be warmer than New York City and the geothermal pools will definitely take off the chill!
