Hawaiian Airlines has announced that in July, 2016, they will inaugurate service from their Honolulu hub to Tokyo’s Narita Airport. As Hawaiian’s 11th international destination, Narita will become their fourth Japanese city, competing with the handful of carriers already offering nonstop service between the two cities. This flight will be operated in addition to Hawaiian’s existing Honolulu-Tokyo Haneda service.

The flight to Narita, which begins on July 22, 2016, will utilize Hawaiian’s Airbus A330-200 aircraft, which offer 18 seats in Business, 40 in their “Extra Comfort” section and 236 in the main cabin. All seats offer entertainment screens that come with a wide variety of tv shows, movies, music and other programming. They monitors also include a USB outlet to charge small, portable electronic devices.

Although the Airbus A330 fleet does not offer lie-flat seats, Hawaiian announced this past October that they will begin installing lie-flat seats in 2016. The first aircraft should be completed in the second quarter of 2016 and Hawaiian expects the cabin overhaul to last through 2017.

In addition to the business class overhaul, Hawaiian hasn’t forgotten about their Extra Comfort cabin. It, too, will receive additional seats.

As part of the cabin redesign, Hawaiian also announced it will add 28 additional Extra Comfort seats on each A330 aircraft in response to growing demand for its popular premium economy service. The Extra Comfort option features 36 inches of seat pitch; priority boarding at the gate; complimentary on-demand in-seat entertainment; and a personal power outlet.

Hawaiian is not alone in flying from Honolulu to Narita, as ANA, China Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JAL, Korean, and United Airlines also offer service. More than 1.5 million passengers flew between Hawaii and Japan in 2013 and George D. Szigeti, president and CEO of the Hawai’i Tourism Authority, had this to say.

Japan is Hawai’i’s largest international market with arrivals from the market making up 18 percent of total arrivals to the state in 2014…Hawaiian Airlines’ daily flight from Narita to Honolulu is projected to contribute an annual $130 million in visitor spending and $14.7 million in state tax revenue.

As mentioned, flights will begin on July 22nd, 2016, with the inaugural service departing Honolulu for Tokyo at 3:30pm, arriving the following day at 7pm. The return service, which begins on July 23rd, will depart Tokyo at 9pm, arriving into Honolulu at 9:55am, the same day.
