In a change that Canada’s Aeroplan claims is “in line with current airline and travel-industry standards,” members will soon see the cost of canceled trips rise.

Beginning Jan. 17, Aeroplan members will pay $135 to get their points reinstated if they cancel their Air Canada trip — an increase of about 80 percent. Currently, members need only pay $75, so long as they give cancellation notice at least 21 days in advance of their scheduled departure.

In addition, various change fees have been altered. The cost of changing the date or number of an award flight will rise to $55 from $25, but changing an itinerary (city-to-city routing) will dip to $55 from $75.

On the plus side, changes to award tickets on Star Alliance partners, currently prohibited, will be allowed as of Jan. 17.
