Members of the Avianca frequent flyer program, the flagship national airline of Columbia, can expect a pleasant surprise on their next birthday, as Avianca will be sending birthday cards with a slim candle to celebrate each member’s special day. While this is a considerate gesture, the sceptic in us can’t help but wonder if the airline is sending the cards, in part, to polish its tarred image as a tardy airline. Shareholders are pinning their hopes on regulators allowing Avianca to join forces with a local rival.
