British Airways Executive Club – August, 15 2002

It looks as though Tesco has ousted Sainsburys as the supermarket of choice when it comes to collecting Air Miles, but Sainsburys is not going without a fight. After its 12-year-old contract with British Airways ended in January, Sainsburys obtained a temporary injunction preventing British Airways (which owns Air Miles but has put it up for sale) from publicizing its new partnership with Tesco before March 15 — the date Tesco joins Air Miles as its supermarket partner.

The high court will allow Tesco to send out direct mail to its Club Card customers informing them of the Air Miles partnership, but has not decided whether Tesco will be able to issue Air Miles for loyalty card points earned prior to March 15. Tesco wants to offer free flights on all outstanding points.

Although the earning potential at Tesco has not been set in stone, early indications suggest that shoppers will earn 250 points for #250 spent over any period of time, which converts to 40 Air Miles. If, however, you spend at least #60 each week, the earning rate doubles to 80 Air Miles once you’ve spent #250.
