Aeroplan is 30 years old. The program began in 1984 and had 100,000 members by the following year. In 2002, the airline made the bold move of separating the Aeroplan frequent flyer program from Air Canada and the program is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Air Canada. In 2005, Aeroplan became the world’s first publicly-traded loyalty program, Aeroplan Income Fund. In 2013, the program did away with the seven-year shelf life for miles. Also in 2013, the program awarded approximately 2.3 million awards, including more than 1.5 million flights on Air Canada and partners with more than 1,200 destinations worldwide.
