Effective Sept. 1, 2011, members of Hawaiian Airlines HawaiianMiles will earn the actual distance flown on all Hawaiian Airlines flights instead of the current minimum miles system. For example, currently flights between Kona and Kahului earn a minimum 500 miles, but when this change comes into effect, that flight will earn only 84 miles. Pualani Platinum, Pualani Gold, Premier Club and Hawaiian Airlines Visa cardholders are exempt from this change.
Bottom line: If you travel within the Hawaiian islands, this change can drastically alter the amount of miles you earn unless you get the Hawaiian Airlines Visa with a $79 annual fee, or sign up for Premier Club by spending 35,000 miles or $249 a year or earn elite status with at least 20,000 flight miles or 30 segments.
