American Airlines, after losing Canadian Airlines to the Air Canada takeover, has finally found a replacement. On May 1, Canadian flyers will be able to earn AAdvantage miles when flying Canada 3000 and vice versa. Redemption opportunities will also be reciprocal, and that includes oneworld redemption opportunities for Canada 3000 flyers. But redemption isn’t slated until later in the year so you must be happy just to earn the miles for now.

Canada 3000 has been a touchy subject of late, bringing back memories of the last days of the American Express Canada partnership with Canadian Airlines. American Express Canada did, of course, eventually partner with Canada 3000. In any case, there was some suggestion that Canada 3000 was going to partner with Air Canada Aeroplan and, in fact, the airline did issue a press release to that effect. It didn’t take long for Air Canada Aeroplan to issue a rebuke: Air Canada does not have an agreement with Canada 3000 and Aeroplan participation will not be extended to the newly-integrated Canada 3000. Canada 3000 seems intent on growing, having recently acquired Canjet and Royal Aviation. But don’t get too excited yet, Canada 3000 is known as a budget carrier and Canjet is known as a discount airline. Guess we may have the miles but probably not the upgrades. There you have it.
