JetBlue has figured out the route to profitability in the airline industry, which has nothing to do with flying planes. Rather, get as many partners as you can, sell them miles and hope for the best. Its current promotion for Zipcar won’t have you flying around the country, but you can pick up a few TrueBlue points and a discount on the car sharing service.
What Is Zipcar?
Zipcar is a car sharing service for urbanites who don’t feel a need to own their own. For the cost of a $70 annual fee and a small hourly rate, you can use one of their cars scattered around town. Kind of like Uber, but you have to drive yourself. And it won’t pick you up. And you pay by the hour, not mile. Okay, not really like Uber, but a way of getting around without owning your own car. Avis bought the company in 2013, but it still maintains a local “flavor.” For an interesting article on the history of the company, check out this piece by The Verge.
JetBlue – Zipcar Partnership
It’s easy enough. If you’re ready to give up your gas guzzler, here’s your chance to earn some TrueBlue points for doing so. Register for the promotion and you will receive $50 in driving credits as well as 500 TrueBlue points. If you are a Mosaic member, you will get 1,000 points. That’s not a huge haul (I value TrueBlue points at 1.5 cents each.), but at least it’s something. The free driving is the biggest benefit in the deal.
There are very few terms and conditions for the deal. You do need to be a first-time Zipcar customer and use your credits within 30 days of joining, but that’s it. Given the flexibility that an outsourced fleet offers, this may be a great option for occasional drivers.
