Guests at Hilton and Marriott hotels who cancel a reservation on the day of the stay will now be charged a cancellation fee equal to one night’s stay as of Jan. 1, 2015. The policies allowing a reservation to be canceled as late as 6pm on the arrival date that has been a standard for more than a decade are changed with guests having until 11:59pm the day before arrival to cancel their reservations without penalty.
Many hotels within the Hilton and Marriott brands have already been requiring two days or more advance notice of cancellation. Hotels that already have an advance notice of cancellation requirement will not be changing their policies, only hotels that have been allowing same-day cancellations will be affected. The new cancellation policy is worldwide for Hilton and within the Americas for Marriott.
Bottom line: Currently, elite status members of Hilton HHonors and Marriott Rewards are being treated the same as any other guest and will be charged if they cancel after the deadline.
