While most banks are eliminating mileage-earning with debit card offers, one bank has announced new sign-up bonus offers for customers who open personal and business checking accounts. Through June 30, 2012, customers who open checking accounts through SunTrust Bank with a Delta SkyMiles co-branded debit card can earn up to 30,000 bonus miles. Plus, you’ll earn one mile per dollar spent on all purchases and two miles per dollar spent on Delta purchases.
Open a new SunTrust checking account with monthly Direct Deposit of $100 or more and select the Delta SkyMiles World Check Card to receive 15,000 bonus miles six to eight weeks after the first qualifying direct deposit is made. You’ll earn another 15,000 bonus miles after using your Delta SkyMiles World Check Card by July 31, 2012. The card has a $75 annual fee and you will be charged a $12 monthly fee if your account balance is less than $3,000. The $12 fee is waived the first two months. Open a business checking account and select the Delta SkyMiles Business Check Card to receive 25,000 bonus miles after making your first transaction by July 31, 2012. The card has a $120 annual fee. Visit http://insideflyerus.wpengine.com/link/?6525 to view additional details.
The terms and conditions for the promotion state that the Delta SkyMiles World Check Cards are issued by SunTrust Banks, Inc. and are available in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Members living in other states have reported being able to open an account over the phone at (800) 786-87878.
Bottom line: Sign-up bonus offers for debit cards are rare now that the Durbin Amendment put a cap on the fees banks can earn for debit card transactions. Delta SkyMiles members can earn up to 55,000 bonus miles by signing up for personal and business checking accounts and debit cards, which is almost enough miles for a roundtrip coach ticket to Europe. And signing up for a checking account will not cause a credit card pull, unlike applying for credit cards. The annual fees are not waived the first year so you will have to pay $195 for both cards.
