Forbes says rising fuel costs and the bankruptcy of American Airlines could hurt frequent flyers. Deborah L. Jacobs, staff writer for Personal Finance at forbes.com had this to say about the current worth of frequent flyer miles: “So, what’s a point-rich but increasingly poor frequent flyer to do? In this climate, hoarding miles is like hoarding Deutsche Marks in Germany before World War II. You can pile up a lot of them, but their value is declining. Some Deutsche Marks wound up being used as wallpaper in German homes. If you have those points, spend them. Plan that vacation now. If you need to use more miles than expected, do it. A year from now the ‘cost’ of that ticket may look like a bargain.”
