American AAdvantage and Citi have introduced a new set of benefits for American AAdvantage Platinum Select cardholders in addition to the benefits the card previously offered. Now, cardholders will get their first checked bag free, and up to four traveling companions will also get one free checked bag.

Cardholders and up to four companions will have priority boarding enabling cardholders to board after first and business class customers and elite status customers, but before the general boarding groups. Another new benefit is a 25 percent discount on inflight purchases.

Cardholders will earn two miles per dollar spent on American Airlines purchases (this differs from the offer in the past that ended the double miles after the first year) and cardholders will get a 10 percent rebate when redeeming for awards–up to 10,000 miles rebated per year. There is no limit to the amount of miles you can earn with card purchases.

Upon renewal of the card, cardholders will get a $100 American Airlines flight discount which basically covers the cost of the card. The new fee is $95 per year, up from $85, and the first year fee continues to be waived.

Benefits staying the same include up to a $100 statement credit when earning $1 statement credits for each $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases made within the first 12 months of cardmembership.

As a new cardmember, you’ll earn 30,000 bonus miles after spending $1,000 in purchases within the first three months of being a cardmember. There are also more lucrative targeted offers available with larger signup mileage bonuses.

Bottom line: Getting a free checked bag is a good benefit, especially if you are not an elite member (it’s a wash for AAdvantage elite members since they get two free checked bags as part of their status benefits). Other airline co-branded credit cards that offer a free checked bag include Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express, which allows up to nine people traveling with you to get a free checked bag compared to American’s four people and the United MileagePlus Explorer Card, which allows a free bag for the cardholder and one companion.

The 25 percent off inflight purchases is rather unique and the 10 percent miles rebate is similar to what Priority Club Rewards offers its cardmembers–but American caps that redemption value at 10,000 miles. The card has a foreign transaction fee of three percent in U.S. dollars of each purchase transaction so is not following the current trend of forgoing the foreign exchange fee. The Reduced Mileage Awards will continue to be offered to cardmembers.
