Qantas Frequent Flyer members will be required to use more points when choosing to pay for award surcharges, fees and taxes with points from April 1, 2012. Members will be charged an additional 350 points beginning April 1 on eligible flights within Australia and New Zealand and an extra 750 points effective July 1, 2012. Qantas says the increase in the number of points required to pay for surcharges, fees and taxes on Qantas Frequent Flyer domestic and regional awards was caused by higher fuel prices and Australia’s new laws designed to decrease carbon emissions. Australia passed carbon price legislation last year where the country’s top 500 carbon-emitting companies will be required to pay a fixed carbon tax of $A23 ($23.78 U.S. dollars) per ton, effective July 2012. Beginning in July 2015, the policy will change to an emissions trading scheme.
