American AAdvantage members will now be charged a fuel surcharge when redeeming miles for award flights on partner Iberia. The fuel surcharge will range from 7.5 to 30 euros, depending on the route.
Bottom line: Compared to the hundreds of dollars some airlines tack on to an award ticket as a fuel surcharge, Iberia Plus’ fuel surcharge is modest. But we hope that American Airlines doesn’t expand its policy of charging AAdvantage members a fuel surcharge on partner flight awards to additional airlines. Right now, British Airways awards are the only other AAdvantage partner awards that require a fuel surcharge. And American isn’t alone in passing on a fuel fee to members. Delta Air Lines adds a fuel surcharge to some award flights on international carriers and Alaska Airlines requires members to pay a fuel surcharge on British Airways flights.
