Zagat, in cooperation with NBC’s Today Show, recently released the results of a survey of 7,498 frequent flyers and travel professionals. The respondents were asked to rate 20 U.S. airlines, airports and other aspects of air travel. A separate survey was conducted regarding international airlines.
The top overall ratings for U.S. airlines showed Midwest Airlines at the top for coach class and newcomer Virgin America for premium class. Virgin America, JetBlue Airways, Frontier Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines rounded out the top five in coach while Continental Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines and AirTran Airways were two through five in premium class. Virgin America was also rated tops in comfort, service and food for premium class and Midwest was tops in the same categories for coach.
Respondents chose Southwest Airlines for the best Web site and timeliness. The top-rated airport was Tampa International, followed by Denver, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Orlando and Detroit Wayne County. The worst-rated airports were New York LaGuardia, Miami, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and New York JFK.
The international airlines survey saw Singapore Airlines at the top for coach and premium class overall as well as first in comfort, service and food in both coach and premium classes. Continental Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Singapore Airlines tied for the top spot internationally with their Web sites. The top-rated airport was Hong Kong International, followed by Singapore Changi, Munich, Tel Aviv Ben Gurion and Amsterdam Schiphol. The worst overall airports were Paris Charles de Gaulle, Beijing Capital, Rome Fiumicino, London Heathrow and London Gatwick.
