SkyMiles members in the U.S. and Canada can easily transfer miles to family and friends with Delta’s new online feature until Jan. 31. Sharing miles can help members reach award levels faster … and feel good about themselves in the meantime.

Members can transfer miles in increments of 1,000 with a 5,000-mile minimum. All transferred miles can be used toward award travel, upgrades and Crown Room Club membership, but not toward elite status. The transferred miles will be withdrawn and deposited within seven business days of the request.

To transfer miles, have the recipient’s SkyMiles account number and log on to http://www.delta.com/transfermiles. Note the fee: $.01 per mile, in addition to a $25 processing fee for each transaction. Canadian members, add an additional $1.75 GST.

In the end, you might just get what you give. If you sign up for the Delta SkyMiles American Express card, you’ll automatically earn 10,000 bonus miles with the first purchase. And you’ll earn at least one mile for every eligible dollar you spend — and there’s no annual fee for the first year.
