Varig Smiles is temporarily abandoning its usual minimum mileage accrual rules.

Until recently, Smiles members earned the number of miles flown, regardless of the flight distance, with a minimum of 500 miles. Through June 30, though, members of the Brazil-based program will earn at least 1,000 miles for every segment flown with VARIG and Pluna.

For instance: though the actual distance between Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre is 535 miles, members who fly during the promotional period will earn an additional 465 miles, for a total of 1,000 miles.
