Reach for the stars for 55,000 bonus miles? Members of various frequent flyer programs related to the Star Alliance can earn up to 55,000 bonus miles for flying five different carriers over a 55-day period.

The promotion runs from May 14 — the fifth anniversary of the founding of the Star Alliance — to July 7. The promotion period may vary slightly with each airline’s frequent flyer program. The Star Alliance members airlines are Air Canada, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Austrian Airlines, bmi british midland, Lauda Air, Lufthansa, Mexicana, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Tyrolean Airways, United Airlines and Varig.

TIPS: First of all, this isn’t as easy as it sounds. Each participating program has different rules and United has the toughest rule requiring at least one intercontinental roundtrip on a single airline.
