The Department of Transportation’s Rapid Response Team is recommending the use of “smart cards” for frequent travelers. The smart cards would identify travelers through a type of biometric technology, such as a retinal scan or fingerprint, and would be routinely checked against a security database compiled by the federal government or the airlines themselves.

Even with a smart card though, there is currently little sanctuary for travelers who battle their way through the lines. Many airlines have begun closing their frequent flyer clubs and lounges as cost cutting measures. American’s Admiral’s Clubs in Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, Nashville and Phoenix will be affected. US Airways has closed lounges at airports in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Newark and Charlotte. United Red Carpet Clubs in Atlanta, Cleveland and Indianapolis have also temporarily closed.
