Hawaiian Airlines has added two features to its HawaiianMiles frequent flyer program, perhaps heralding similar changes in the industry as a whole.

Effective immediately, HawaiianMiles is offering a three-tiered award structure, and making all awards one-way only.

Members thus have three choices of awards — SuperSaver, Saver, and Anytime — that they may mix and match to put together a complete itinerary. Transpacific flights, for instance, can be had at 17,500, 25,000, or 35,000 miles each way, depending on the class of award.

Theoretically, the new structure should allow members to find a seat on any flight, with no blackout dates. If a member is willing to pay for an anytime award, no capacity controls will apply.

Some have suggested that 2006 will be a big year for redemption offers like this, but most expected to see such changes come from the legacy carriers.
