Marriott Rewards elite members can “buy back” elite status for 2014 with their Marriott Rewards points through April 1, 2014.
Marriott Rewards elite members who didn’t re-qualify for elite status can now “buy back” their status with Marriott Rewards points through April 1, 2014.
Only one level of buy back is allowed and it must match the elite level you attained in the previous year.
Points required to buy back Silver status – 7,500
Points required to buy back Gold status – 25,000
Points required to buy back Platinum status – 40,000
If you do not have enough points in your account, Marriott allows you to buy up to 50,000 points per year. Points can be purchased in increments of 1,000 ($12.50 per 1,000).

I wonder why airlines don’t do this? Seems an obvious way to unload some liability of miles/points accumulating on their balance sheets. Would remove a lot of the need for award chart inflation I think.
