JetBlue has announced that it will begin installing broadband Internet on its planes. Most of the in-flight Internet on airlines is provided by Aircell’s GoGo network that connects to towers on the ground, which means that flights are unable to pick up the signal and provide Internet access when crossing the ocean. A few airlines, including Southwest and Alaska, have partnered with Row 44, which relies on a satellite infrastructure that isn’t limited to terrestrial flights. JetBlue is going with the satellite system provided by ViaSat; however, the ViaSat-1 satellite hasn’t actually been launched yet, and JetBlue says the first Internet installations won’t occur until mid-2012. But the new satellite is expected to provide “exponentially more bandwidth than any product in commercial aviation today.” For more information, visit http://insideflyerus.wpengine.com/link/?3045
