American Airlines and Qatar Airways are now codeshare partners leading up to Qatar joining oneworld. American AAdvantage members can now earn miles on codeshare flights operated by Qatar Airways (the Qatar flight must have an American Airlines flight number). There’s no news yet of when AAdvantage members will be able to redeem their miles for Qatar flights.

Bottom line: Etihad Airways, a major competitor to Qatar Airways, is also a partner with American Airlines. If you have plans to redeem award flights on Etihad with AAdvantage miles, it might be best to do that now because after Qatar enters oneworld, the partnership between American and Etihad might come to an end.
