In an email to members, SPG highlighted some of the top earners of Starpoints and biggest redemptions in 2012. The member who earned the most number of points from hotel stays earned 955,100 points and the member who earned the most points from food and beverage purchases earned 441,123 points. Members earn two points per $1 spent (three points per $1 spent as a Gold or Platinum elite) and a regular member would need to spend $220,561 on food and beverage charges to earn that amount ($147,041 as an elite member).
The biggest SPG Flights redemption was 870,000 points for two business class tickets between Los Angeles and Rome. The highest SPG redemption stay was 960,000 points for 10 nights (including the fifth night free) in a suite at the St. Regis Bali and the most popular destination among members for free nights was The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali.
In 2012, SPG also began offering SPG Lifetime Platinum status to members who earned at least 500 lifetime eligible nights and 10 years of Platinum status. Of those who qualified, 25 Lifetime Platinum members qualified with over 2,000 eligible nights–that’s nearly five and a half years of nights in a hotel room.
