Start the New Year Off Right, By Earning Thousands of Bonus Miles

Schedule those out-of-town meetings and book those flights for the first quarter of 2004, because there are an abundance of bonus miles to be had.

Alaska Airlines, American and United have each announced New Year bonus promotions, some offering members up to triple miles for flights through March.

Let’s start with American and United, whose promotions are nearly identical. Mileage Plus and AAdvantage members who fly 10,000 qualifying miles before Feb. 29 will earn double bonus miles on all eligible flights through the end of March. And if 10,000 miles are flown before the end of March, the member will receive a one-time bonus of 5,000 miles.

The bonus promotions are relatively free of restrictions. On United, W, S and T fares will count as qualifying flights toward the achievement of the 10,000-mile requirement, but will not earn triple or double miles once the 10,000-mile plateau has been reached. And on American, flights on L and N fares will not earn the bonuses.

Alaska Airlines opted to forego the 10,000-mile requirement and the restrictive fares and is offering Mileage Plan members double miles on all Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, American and American Eagle flights between Jan. 3 and March 15, when the miles are credited to a Mileage Plan account.

Each of the offers allow for unlimited earning, as none have capped the number of bonus-mile-earning flights that may be taken during the promotional period.

To take advantage of any or all of these promotions, members must register at the airlines’ respective Web sites.

Looks like a great start to a New Year.
