We’ve written about the change Hertz made to charging renters to help fund the cost of miles … and so have many others. But what has not been written about is that we believe that the American AAdvantage program in a bold move for members rights, would not allow Hertz to pass along the fee to members of that program. So what happens? Well, Hertz now only allows AAdvantage members to earn 1 mile for every 2 dollars spent on all qualifying rentals worldwide with the exception of travel industry rates, those using frequent traveler awards and certain tour products. Sorry to have to tell you this, but it’s better you hear it from us than as you catch the Hertz shuttle bus back to the terminal to catch that American flight. One thing we’d like to make perfectly clear-we believe that Hertz offers a high quality product and is as well run a company as any around, we simply don’t care for the way they treat frequent flyer programs. We’re very pleased to see American AAdvantage stand up to them and not allow these fees to be passed along to their members. It would have been admirable for other frequent flyer programs to show the same moxy.
