In the red corner, we have Marriott and its “Take Two” promotion, which offers two free weekend nights and Silver elite status through 2003 to members who stay three times through June 15.

And, in the other red corner, we have the Starwood “Free Weekends Worldwide” promotion, offering members two free weekends (four free weekend nights) after 10 stays.

Let’s get ready to ruuuummbblle.

You have a month longer in which to accomplish the Starwood promotion, but the Marriott promotion only requires three stays (conceivably as few as three nights), rather than 10 nights. But if you manage to complete the 10 nights at Starwood you will earn two free weekends – twice what Marriott offers. The Starwood Free Weekends Worldwide can be redeemed at any participating Starwood worldwide, except the Regis. The Marriott free weekend certificates have a longer redemption period and can be used at any of approximately 2,000 category one through four hotels. And, Marriott is throwing Silver elite status into the deal. Both promotions require registration.

So who wins in this heavyweight match-up? You do. These are both very good promotions and members really can’t go wrong with either. And, since it is not possible participate in either promotion more than once, you might consider trying to do both.

It is a shame the St. Regis Hotels & Resorts are not participating in the redemption of Free Weekends Worldwide. However, stays at any St. Regis property will count toward earning Free Weekends Worldwide. Free Weekends may be redeemed from April 1 through Aug. 31 at all other Starwood Preferred Guest participating hotels and resorts around the world. Think Luxury Collection.

The Marriott promotion “Take Two” runs from March 14 through June 15. It is necessary to register and members may do so by calling (800) 442-6133 or online at http://www.marriottrewards.com.

Preferred Guest members who stay five nights between March 1 and June 30 at any of 750 hotels around the world will earn two free Friday nights, and five more nights in the same time period will earn two free Saturdays. Members who book their stays online will receive 500 bonus points. Free Weekends Worldwide awards are non-transferable and must be used by the qualifying member.
