Last month, members of HawaiianMiles found that the redemption amounts for Virgin Atlantic award tickets changed without warning, and the change was not good news. For example, previously, HawaiianMiles members could fly Virgin Atlantic Upper Class between the U.S. and Europe for 100,000 miles, or between the U.S. and anywhere else in the world for 140,000 miles, with no fuel surcharge. Now, award flights are designated by region to or from the U.K., so if you want to fly from the U.S. to Asia, for example, you must redeem for the North America east or west coast portion as well as the U.K. to Asia portion. What this means is that an Upper Class roundtrip award ticket between west coast U.S. and the Middle East, Asia, Africa or Australia is between 285,000 and 320,000 miles–quite a leap from the previous 140,000 miles. A coach roundtrip award ticket between the U.S. east coast and the U.K. is now 60,000 miles and from the west coast, 80,000 miles; up from 50,000 miles.
