The next time you’re in an unfamiliar city and want to find what’s walkable from your hotel, check out http://walkscore.com. The site is built with house hunters in mind, but works very well for travelers. You input the address where you’re staying and a map will post with points of interest such as grocery stores, coffee shops, bars, movie theaters, drug stores, bookstores and more. The Web site’s maps are similar to Google maps, but the site rates the walkability from 0-100 using a patent-pending algorithm to calculate the walkability of an address. The rating is based on the distance to walkable locations near an address, calculating a score for each of these locations, and combining the scores into one Walk Score. As the site states, it’s “good for your health and good for the environment” to walk.
