In September we predicted that MCI would likely be out of the major part of their miles business by years end. Were we right or what?

Long the king of telecommunications partners, MCI has seen an abrupt end to many of its airline partnerships. United Mileage Plus is among the latest (partner US Airways is seeking a similar change) airlines to hang up on MCI.

Enter Sprint. Through Dec. 31, Mileage Plus members who switch to Sprint 7 cents AnyTime residential long-distance service will earn 5,000 Mileage Plus bonus miles. Sign up online at www.mymileageplus.com, and net an additional 1,000 bonus miles.

Once signed up, Mileage Plus members will earn five miles for every dollar spent with Sprint and save two dollars a month off the standard $5.95 monthly fee. We’re disappointed that Sprint has not opted to award seven miles per dollar spent for United’s Premier members, -something they offered to elite members of other partnerships. Without the competition of MCI anymore, fewer choices mean fewer opportunities.

And American Airlines has teamed up with AT&T to provide AAdvantage members a chance to earn up to 5,000 miles by signing up for qualifying AT&T residential long distance and local service, also ending their relationship with MCI. New AT&T customers can earn up to 5,000 for making the switch to certain AT&T services while current customers can earn five AAdvantage miles for every qualifying AT&T service. New and current subscribers can call (800) 428-2600, ext. 29600 to sign up for the new service and start earning miles.
