United Continental Holdings is spending $550 million on improvements to its fleet and elite members will have more opportunities for upgrades after the changes have been made. The airline will begin installing Economy Plus seating on all Continental mainline aircraft, and by the end of the year, 38 Continental planes will be outfitted with Economy Plus and another 100 planes will have Economy Plus seats by spring 2012. After all of the Economy Plus seating has been installed, over 850 aircraft will have an Economy Plus section. In order to make room for Economy Plus seats, regular coach seats will be removed and first and business class seating will remain the same. All elite members of United MileagePlus and OnePass receive complimentary upgrades to Economy Plus seats, which have up to five inches of extra legroom. Economy Plus and first class seating will be installed in all 29 United Express Q400s.

Other fleet improvements include the installation of flat-bed seats, on-demand audio and video and iPod connectivity in the premium cabins on 26 Boeing 767s, which mainly fly transatlantic, Latin American and Hawaiian routes.
