Through Dec. 31, 2008, American AAdvantage members can buy, gift, share or receive more miles. You can purchase or give miles, up to 60,000 miles per calendar year (per AAdvantage account) through the buyAAmiles program, up from the usual 40,000 miles limit. And you can transfer up to 100,000 of your miles to another AAdvantage member, up from the usual 60,000 miles limit, through the shareAAmiles program. The cost to buy/gift miles starts at $27.50 per 1,000 miles plus a $30 transaction processing fee and U.S. Federal excise tax of 7.5 percent. The cost to share miles starts at $50 from 1,000 to 5,000 miles with the same transaction fee, for up to 25,000 miles per transaction.
