American Express has announced that American Express Platinum Cardmembers will get additional benefits starting this June. The personal, business and corporate versions of the Platinum card will have the option of joining the Boingo American Express Preferred Plan for free, which offers access to 700,000 land-based WiFi hotspots in airports, retail and hotel locations worldwide for up to four devices. This service does not include inflight WiFi. Another new benefit is an $85 statement credit to apply towards the TSA Precheck program providing expedited screening for pre-approved and low-risk travelers at participating U.S. airports. The card will continue to offer a $100 statement credit for the Global Entry program, which provides expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the U.S., and is meant for frequent international travelers. Cardmembers must choose between TSA Precheck and Global Entry.
Bottom line: If you were to get a similar Boingo plan that offers global access, the cost would be $59 per month, or $708 per year. Global Entry includes TSA Precheck benefits and the statement credit is available once every five years. A cardmember would probably choose for TSA Precheck only if most of their travel is within the U.S.
