Gary Leff of View from the Wing at BoardingArea.com recently reported on a change coming to the Hilton HHonors American Express cards. Currently, the cards offer six HHonors points (double points) at U.S. stand-alone supermarkets and on gasoline at U.S. stand-alone gas stations. But starting May 1, 2013, members will see changes to this earning offer with the first billing period that begins, or is after, this date.
The Hilton HHonors Card from American Express (no annual fee) will earn seven points per dollar at Hilton Worldwide properties (this is up one point from the current six points); five points per dollar at restaurants, gas stations and supermarkets in the U.S. (down one point at gas stations and supermarkets but up two points for restaurants) as well as the usual three points per dollar for all other eligible purchases. The Hilton HHonors Surpass Card from American Express ($75 annual fee) will earn 12 points per dollar at Hilton Worldwide properties, six points per dollar at restaurants, gas stations and supermarkets in the U.S. and the same three points for all other eligible purchases.
Bottom line: As Leff points out, “… some will prefer the new bundle of points earning and others will find it less rewarding for their particular spending habits. But these are the actual changes coming down the pike, with a few months’ notice.”
