Even if you aren’t an active member of Flying Blue, the frequent flyer program of Air France and KLM, you can still take advantage of their bi-monthly Promo Awards if you collect American Express Membership Rewards points.
Membership Rewards points can be transferred into Flying Blue miles at a 1:1 ratio. Flying Blue Promo Awards offer a discount of 50 percent off regular award rates. Through April 30, 2012, discounted routes include flights to Europe from Chicago, Atlanta, Houston and Toronto. Awards on these routes are reduced to 25,000 miles roundtrip in coach and 50,000 miles in business.
Bottom line: While the price in miles is cheap, Flying Blue has fuel surcharges that can range between $500 and $900. A business class roundtrip flight from the U.S. to Europe for only 50,000 points is a great deal but when you factor in a fuel surcharge of $900, it doesn’t look so great any more so be sure to check the taxes and fees before transferring your Membership Rewards points.
