Alitalia has introduced a new award level, allowing members to overcome high-season capacity controls — if they’re willing to pay.

The “Plus Award” will run twice as many miles as the standard award, but allows members a wider choice of seats, the ability to change itineraries without an extra fee, and (uniquely) an excess baggage allowance of up to 10 kg. (in addition to any extra allowances for elite members).

The Plus award is available only in economy class for routes served by the Alitalia Group. If, for some reason, you decide to “downgrade” to a Standard ticket, you’ll be charged a fee of 51.65 Euro and 4,000 miles.
