Predicting Mergers

Predicting Mergers

In February 2008, we asked a few questions about mergers for our monthly AirPoll survey and it’s interesting to note that those who responded indirectly predicted the merger between Delta and Northwest and the upcoming merger (if approved) between Continental and United. When we asked, which of these potential mergers do you like the best, the two choices with the most votes are the mergers that actually came to pass–32.7 percent chose Delta and Northwest and 24.8 percent chose United and Continental. Coming in third was American and Continental with 14.2 percent of the votes, followed by United and US Airways, American and Alaska and US Airways and American. While it’s still possible that American may hook up with Alaska or US Airways, most people didn’t choose either of these pairings as their favorite.
