Alaska Bags

Effective on tickets purchased May 1 for travel on or after June 16, travelers on Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air will be charged $20 for each checked bag, up to three bags. The fees previously charged were $15 for a first checked bag, $25 for a second and $50 for a third. The fee for additional bags (fourth through 10th checked bags) is now $50 (from $100).

Travelers who check two bags will continue to pay $40 for both bags, but the cost to check one bag is now $5 more expensive.

Unlike every other airline charging for bags, Alaska Airlines guarantees that your bag will be at baggage claim within 20 minutes and if it’s not, passengers can choose either 2,000 Mileage Plan miles or $20 off a future flight. The baggage service guarantee used to be set at 25 minutes but has been reduced to 20 minutes.

First class, Mileage Plan MVP and MVP Gold members and passengers traveling to or from Mexico can continue to check two bags for free. Travelers flying wholly within the state of Alaska and active duty military personnel can check up to three bags at no charge. And in case you were wondering, Alaska Airlines reports it does not plan to charge for carry-on bags like Spirit Airlines.
