United and Air Canada

United Mileage Plus members who regularly fly on Air Canada take note–the number of miles you earn on Air Canada flights has changed. Elite members now earn a 500-mile minimum on all Air Canada flights plus elite flight bonuses. Premier members will earn a 25 percent redeemable miles bonus and Premier Executives and 1K members will earn a 100 percent bonus when flying on Air Canada. All Mileage Plus members will now receive a 50 percent EQM/EQS bonus when flying in business (J,C,D,Z) and unrestricted coach (Y, B). Mileage accrual in Z class has been reduced from 125 percent to 100 percent (redeemable miles only) and the 250 or 500-mile minimum non-elite members used to earn will become actual flight miles on all Air Canada flights. All other discounted coach flights will earn 100 percent of the miles flown except for booking classes K,N,G,P,E,T (Air Canada’s Tango fares) that do not earn redeemable miles within North America but earn 100 percent EQM/EQS credit. Bottom line: With these changes United Airlines giveth and taketh away. This is great news for elite members who now earn elite bonus miles on Air Canada flights, but non-elite members no longer earn the 250- or 500-mile minimum on short flights. And Tango fares that used to earn 50 percent of miles flown and 50 percent EQM/EQS no longer earn any redeemable miles but the give back is that these flights will qualify for full EQM/EQS credit.
