At press time, the media was abuzz with reports of the battle between American Airlines and Delta Air Lines as to which airline could make their claim on Japan Airlines. According to Bloomberg, American proposed a $1.1 billion investment–an amount possible because of AMR’s sale of frequent flyer miles to credit card partner Citigroup, Inc. to the tune of $1 billion. This is certainly another example of why frequent flyer programs are here to stay.
