Southwest Northern Update

Southwest Airlines has submitted an application to the Department of Transportation to operate flights between the U.S. and Canada. The application for a certificate to provide foreign air transportation is necessary for the airline to fully implement its previously announced codeshare with Canada’s WestJet. The certificate will also give Southwest the authority to operate flights to Canada on its own planes, although Southwest says it does not have any plans to do so at this time. The certificate should be in Southwest’s hands by the first quarter of this year. Codeshare flights between the two airlines should begin the second half of this year and although the airlines have not yet finalized the itineraries for the codeshare flights, The Dallas Morning News reports that the likely codeshare routes are to/from Las Vegas, Orlando and Tampa connecting to WestJet transborder flights to/from Calgary, Toronto or Vancouver.
