Are There Really Princesses in Frequent Flyer Programs?

Do you remember the last time you signed up for a frequent flyer program and were asked to choose a title? Mr., Mrs., Ms. are the most common and sometimes, a Dr. or even a Sir will pop up in the title list. But did you know Bishop, Brigadier, Princess, Swami or Squad Leader are also options? These are just a few of the quirky selections that airlines have made available for those with either a sense of humor or a serious sense of pride in their title.

Sure, there are Princesses and Swamis out there, it’s just amusing to think that they are members of frequent flyer programs like you and me. Some other lofty titles include Lord, Lady, Baron, Duke, Cardinal, Chaplain and Earl. They’ve got everything from religious leaders to medieval property rights owners — and no matter how humorous they may seem to us, the AAdvantage department seems to take these titles very seriously; we even called them to test it out. One of our staff changed his title to Brigadier and he was addressed accordingly when he called. We can only wonder if the Princesses and Squad Leaders are secretly given preferential seating. If you decide to upgrade your title, let us know if you’re seated in the exit row or mysteriously get a free upgrade on subsequent flights.
